In June 2022, County staff were approached by members of the Dysart Cultural Resources Committee to discuss the concept of Wayfinding for both Dysart et al and the County of Haliburton as a whole.
County Council with support from all the Townships within the County directed staff to began the process of undertaking a Community Wayfinding Strategy.
What is Wayfinding
Wayfinding involves using information to navigate both built and natural environments. It includes:
Organizing Information: Structuring information to assist users in finding their way.
Beyond Signage: While signage design is a component of wayfinding, it encompasses much more.
Assessing and Identifying Issues: A successful wayfinding plan identifies and addresses issues and sources of confusion within the environment, resulting in effective communication solutions.
Effective wayfinding, through appropriate design, fabrication, and installation, can significantly enhance the appeal and attractiveness of a destination.
Benefits of Wayfinding
Although hard to quantify the economic impact of Wayfinding signage some qualitative benefits of a cohesive wayfinding program are noted below:
Boost the local economy through increased spending within the County by directing traffic to business areas and community assets.
Control the path of travel for visitors to increase the economic impact of pass thru traffic.
Increase visitation to key public and potentially private tourism attractions and assets.
Enhance the overall image of the County of Haliburton as a destination with a consistent and attractive design standard for tourism wayfinding signage.
Improve sense of community, pedestrian safety, and place-making while mitigating interference with regulatory traffic signage
A tender was issued in 2023 to complete the Wayfinding Strategy and the firm Pl.ural was retained to complete the project. In the summer of 2024 a report was presented to County Council summarizing the feedback heard from key stakeholders and draft of proposed municipally owned community assets to be included on the signage.
Following the presentation to County Council in July, Pl.ural has begin finalizing sign design concepts and have created a survey below for stakeholders to respond to that will further finalize the design of the wayfinding signage.
